ANGIE - Saturday's third annual observance of Black History Month by members of the Angie, Varnado and Live Oak communities, presided over by King Freddie Jefferson and Queen Roxie A. Mondy Roberts, was well-attended and went off without a hitch.

The observance, which is put together by the Concerned Citizens group, was a celebration in memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The celebration included a parade and and program that featured participants from a number of community churches.

Jefferson, of the Wesley Ray community, is a graduate of Wesley Ray High School, graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge and is a retiree from the Washington Parish school system. He currently serves on the board of that system.

Roberts also graduated from Wesley Ray, where she was a basketball standout and helped lead her team to four consecutive state championships. After working with the Louisiana State University expanded food nutrition program for 18 1/2 years, she retired in 1986.

Both Jefferson and Roberts have been active in their communities.

Jefferson has served as a board member and manager of the Washington Educational Association Federal Credit Union, vice president of the Varnado Water Works, president of the Washington Parish Housing Authority and board member of the Angie Volunteer Fire Department.

He attends Wesley Ray United Methodist Church, where he teaches the young adult class, chairs the finance committee and is president of the Men's Club.

He was married to the late Geraldine Robinson Jefferson and is the father of three sons - Derran, Kenneth and Freddie - all of Baton Rouge.

Roberts is a member of Live Oak United Methodist Church, where she serves as a class leader, youth director, financial secretary, communion steward, choir member, member of the outreach ministry and as a trustee.

She and her late husband, Hersey Lee Roberts, Sr., had 13 children, 39 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.

She is also a member of the Community Prayer Band, Varnado High School PTA, Concerned Citizens AND Washington Parish NAACP.

The parade will begin at Angie Junior High at noon and end at Wesley Ray Community Park, where the program will be held.
