BOGALUSA - World champions Herbert Theriot of Poplarville, Miss., in calf roping and Taw Avery of Zachary in steer wrestling are expected to headline this weekend's Louisiana Western Festival at the Bogalusa Community Arena, located on Airport Road. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children under 12 and are available at the gate.

Livestock for the rodeo, which will be a fully sanctioned Tri-State Rodeo Association event, will be provided by Klein Brothers Rodeo Co., 5M Rodeo Co. and Four Oaks Rodeo Co.

"That's a big difference this year," explained rodeo organizer Robbie Thomas about the sanctioning of the event. "Last year, we probably had 100 entrants and this year, we'll probably have 300."

Thomas said that's because as a TSRA-sanctioned event, points and prize money is up for grabs that can help cowboys and cowgirls get to the year-end finals, which are limited to the top 15 contestants in each event.

This year's Western Festival opens at 8 p.m. Thursday with open jackpot barrel racing, followed by a rodeo session at 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.

Other events with the festival include a cowboy breakfast and trail ride at the arena at 9 a.m. Saturday and a buckaroo rodeo for the youngsters at 4 p.m. Saturday.

"All of the proceeds from the rodeo go to the arena upkeep," Thomas said, adding that strong sponsor support helped make more money available for the arena. He said a portion of the trail ride proceeds would go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, which has a riding therapy program.

"That's the unique thing about the arena," he said. "It was built by horsemen for horsemen and is open to anyone without charge. If you pay a $10 membership in the Washington Parish Horseman's Association, you have access to the arena and you also get a vote."

Prize money is $300 added with $500 added in bull riding. Only eight contestants will be run in each performance and slack will be run at 9 a.m. Saturday. Slack will only be taken after both performances are filled.
