Police to learn 'verbal judo'

BOGALUSA - Area police officers and other personnel who have to deal with the public will be taking an advanced communication course this week - verbal judo.

So, what is verbal judo?

According to the course decryption, verbal judo, like judo itself, uses the energy of other s to master situations. It contains a set of communication principles and tactics that enable the user to generate cooperation and gain voluntary compliance from others under stressful conditions.

"These tactics are especially useful when dealing with hostile, angry upset, frustrated or disgruntled people," according to the course description.

The Bog-alusa Police Department the two-day seminar to be conducted in two sessions: Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday and Friday. Both sessions will be held at the YWMCA, 409 Plaza St.

"It's very beneficial to people who deal with the public," said BPD Chief Jerry Agnew Sr.

The course will be taught by Dr. George Thompson, who founded the verbal judo philosophy and has written multiple books on the topic.

"He's trained (verbal judo to) the entire New York Police Department," Agnew said, adding good commication skills is essential in police work. "You've got to have the right communication skills."

And while some of those skills are taught in the police academy, verbal judo represents advanced training many policemen have not had before.

The seminars run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. are directed toward agency professionals who deal with the public in stressful situations. Those interested in signing up for the $100 course should do so by Monday. Call Sharon Evans, 732-6209, at BPD headquarters for more information.
