According to Louisiana State Police TFC Louis Calato, Evelyn Breland was killed when her 1990 model pickup, which was traveling south, was hit head-on by a 2004 model automobile driven by Rickey Peters.

Following treatment at LSU Bogalusa Medical Center, Peters was charged and booked into the Washington Parish Jail on charges of negligent homicide, two counts of negligent injuring, careless operation and no driver's license.

For unknown reasons, Calato said, Peters' vehicle traveled approximately 150 feet off the right side of the roadway before he overcorrected to the left. Peters' vehicle then began to rotate counterclockwise upon reentering the roadway, crossed the centerline and impacted Breland's vehicle head-on.

Following the impact, Peters' vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane facing east, and Breland's vehicle came to rest in the ditch off the west side of the roadway, also facing east.

Breland died at the scene, according to Mike Varnado of the Washington Parish Coroner's office.

Peters and two passengers in his vehicle, 28-year-old Tommy Clark of Angie and 18-year-old Melissa Youngblood of Bogalusa, were transported to LSU Bogalusa Medical Center, where they were treated - Peters for minor injuries and Clark and Youngblood for moderate injuries.
