100 notifications have been mailed out to recipients

BOGALUSA - Notification letters to 100 recipients of Care and Share food vouchers were mailed Tuesday. The recipients were selected from nearly 400 applicants for the program, now in its 27th year.

"We had applicants from all across Washington Parish," explained Daily News publisher John H. Walker. "It is clear that there is a great deal of need in our community."

Walker said recipients also came from all corners of the parish - Bogalusa, Franklinton, Angie, Varnado, Pine, Mount Hermon and the rural areas in between.

The outlook for this year's program had been dim until a $3,000 donation by employees of Joe Miles Lumber Co. started a push that sent the total over the top.

"We've received a little more than $4,700 since last Friday," Walker explained. "That takes us to $7,790 and while it meets this year's goal, anything extra will be put in the bank and carried over for next year. Every dollar is always used and always important."

The vouchers have no cash value, no change will be given and they cannot be used for tobacco, alcohol or non-food items. The vouchers will list the recipients' name and identifying data that must also be produced at the participating grocer. The vouchers expire at the end of the business day on Monday, Dec. 31.

In 1982, the newspaper recognized a need to help provide one of the elements of "a Merry Christmas" to thousands of the less-privileged people throughout the parish.

That element was a bounteous supply of food for the Christmas holiday.

Use of the vouchers eliminates the problem of there not being enough volunteer manpower to continue to purchase, box and deliver the food supplies. The vouchers will be individualized so that they cannot be copied. They will also not be transferable, which will eliminate any possibility of theft.

Participating grocery stores include Travis', Main Street and Piggly Wiggly.

Persons wishing to make a donation to the Care and Share program may do so by either coming to the newspaper at 525 Ave. V or by sending a donation to Care and Share, P.O. Box 820, Bogalusa, 70429.
