Black History celebration parade scheduled for Jan. 19

ANGIE - The fourth annual Black History celebration in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held on Saturday.

The festivities will begin with a parade at noon at Angie Jr. High School and ending at Wesley Ray Community Park.

Following the parade, a program with songs, poems and readings will be held with refreshments and activities for all ages.

All churches and organizations throughout Washington Parish are encouraged to participate. Entries for the parade are $50 for churches and organizations or $25 for individuals and must be paid by Monday. All participants are requested to be at Angie Jr. High by 11 a.m. and lined up by noon.

The 2008 royal couple for the parade is King Lonnie Lewis and Queen Jessie Mae Newson Peters.

Lewis was born on July 12, 1928, in Varnado to the late Charlie and Wilma Moses Lewis. He is married to Helen Henery Lewis and they have four children, Joe Edward Lewis, Janice Lewis, Elgrie Lewis and Carylon D. Lewis. He is a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, a deacon and a member of the brotherhood.

He is affiliated with the community prayer band and a devoted member of the Concerned Citizens organization. He was employed with Joe Morris Roofing Company for 13 years, Charity Hospital for 18 years and Pulpwood for 18 years.

Peters, age 80, was born in Columbia, Miss., to the late Isodore and Lillie Newson. She is the mother of four children, Robert W. (Annie Ruth) Peters, Willie B (Kathy) Peters III, Amss (Odessa) Peters and Annie Pearl (Eugene) Allen all of Angie. She has 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She is a member of Center Missionary Baptist Church, serves as president of the South Missionary State Ushers, past president of Second Springhill District Ushers and active in her local church.

Churches are asked to select at least one youth to participate in the program with a song, poem and or reading in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. For more information, contact Bro. Ozell Nichols at 986-3746 or Bro. Levi Lewis at 735-5890.
