Franklinton Demons shut out Spartans in five innings Thursday

SLIDELL - Winning is all the Franklinton Demons seem to know how to do these days.

FILE PHOTO Franklinton pitcher Aaron Maples has been a key component in the Demons' 15 wins this year. On Tuesday against Salmen, Maples threw a one-hit shutout.

The Demons baseball team beat the Salmen Spartans 12-0 in five innings on Tuesday.

Aaron Maples pitched a complete game shutout. He walked two, struckout two and gave up no runs on one hit.

Maples was questionable to pitch before the game after getting hit in the shoulder in warm-ups.

"We were a little concerned," FHS head coach Jeff Tageant said. But then Maples went out and threw 61 pitches in five innings.

Franklinton scored five runs in the second inning of the game. David Hofstetter doubled, Jade Dillon doubled to bring in Hofstetter, Hunter Thomas singled and had an RBI and Nick Giordano reached on an error and had an RBI. Then Alex Billings reached on an error and Terrance Magee singled to score two runs.

"He's streaky. He'll throw a hit in there, and then he might not get a hit for a couple days," Tageant said on first baseman Hofstetter, who has been hitting the ball well lately.

In the fourth inning, the Demons added four more runs to their score.

Billings reached on error and Magee walked. Hofstetter was hit-by-a-pitch and Dillon tripled to bring all of them home. Then Thomas doubled to score Dillon.

In the top of the fifth, Franklinton's Giordano reached on an error, catcher Evan Tageant reached on a fielder's choice and DJ Martin hit a homerun to make it 12-0.

"We're swinging the bats. We've gotten some big hits when we've needed them," Tageant said.

The Demons are 15-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in district play. The keys to Franklinton's success so far are pitching and consistent hitting.

"Our most consistent batters are our first seven batters. Those guys have really been swinging it well. Thomas looked sharp today," Tageant said. "We're able to hit one-through-nine, and we also have a couple guys on the bench who can swing it pretty well also."

Franklinton plays again today at 4:30 p.m. against University High in a non-district game.
