"We had kind of a cleanup on the offense yesterday, and we just went through all of our offensive sets," Meyerchick said. "Today we are going to give them assignments on defense."

Seniors LaTruan Weary and Derrick Gibson are two players that Meyerchick is looking to for leadership.

"I really want to get a good look at the incoming freshman too. We've got a couple who should be pretty good," Meyerchick said.

Those freshman include eighth-grader Laterrius "Teeda" Crumedy, who has been working out with the team and will play at running back. Also, Jeremy Wolfe was a quarterback at the junior high school.

The three-way spring game will allow, for example, Varnado's offense to play against Kentwood's defense, or Kentwood's offense to face Independence's defense.

"Independence is going to be a challenge because they have almost everybody back," Meyerchick said. "Kentwood is always good. Even when they're bad, they're good.

VHS has had no injuries in spring practices. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
