BOGALUSA - Dr. David Killen, chiropractic physician and owner of Back on Track, a chiropractic, rehab and wellness center, says people don't have to live with back pain, and relief doesn't have to involve drugs or a scalpel.

"Before you have surgery, all I ask is that you give us a chance," he said. "Give us two weeks, and if you're not 50 percent better, then consider the options."

Just living with the pain is not necessary, he said.

"There are people that live in pain every day," said Killen. "You don't have to. There is a solution. You're not just getting older. There is a reason for your pain. I'd like to find it, get to the source and try to help so you don't have to live with the pain any more."

He said it might take some time, but he's equipped to get the job done.

Killen treats a wide range of problems including scoliosis, disc degeneration and pinched nerves at Back on Track, which opened in February. He's one of only a couple people in the state trained to offer the Pettibon technique of postural correction.

Killen said he was recently able to restore the curve in one young patient's neck from 20 percent to more than 40 percent in just 90 days, using that technique.

Massage and other therapies are also offered at Back on Track. And "nutriceuticals," pharmaceutical grade supplements that can be prescribed to "speed up the healing process," are available.

The supplements include a natural anti-inflammatory and a liver detoxifier.

"They do a lot of things pharmaceuticals do, but they're safer," said Killen.

Chiropractic offers a holistic approach to spinal health, he said.

Back on Track uses weights, vibration, manipulation and more. The business is also about to receive shipment of a decompression table.

Killen said people need to care for their spines, just like their teeth, throughout their lives. If they encounter a problem, they should address it so it doesn't get worse.

"As a chiropractor, I'm an expert on the spine," he said. "No doctor knows more about the spine than a chiropractor. And while medical doctors give drugs, we consider drugs like Band-aids. They patch a problem and hope it goes away. We look at what's actually causing the pain, and go to the root to fix it. And we don't do surgery."

Many kinds of medical insurance now include chiropractic, said Killen. And Back on Track offers a cash plan for patients who exceed limits or whose visits are not covered, he said.

Back on Track is located at 336 Michigan Avenue, across from the movie theatre.

It's open from 8 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. For additional information, call 735-1112.
